A modern-day Tandang Sora has emerged in the midst of the government's all-out war against the Novel Coronavirus 19.

Laurita Miguel-Baculi took time out from her job as development facilitator of the Department of Agrarian Reform in Cagayan Valley and put herself and her family to the task of providing the country's fighting force against the Covid (Coronavirus Disease) 19 -- a contingent of health workers, police, soldiers and barangay public safety officers -- free improvised face shields.

The 59-year-old Laurita, her children and other household members produce the improvised personal protection equipment (PPE) face shields themselves out of translucent plastic, foam and strings to make up for the short supply of these vital protective gear.

"I thought of making improvised face shields because I was too worried about my two children, who are both health workers themselves," Laurita said.

The family initially thought of making said masks for the use of family members and relatives, some of them are also health workers, she said.

Realizing, however, the strong demand for face shields, especially among the frontliners, the Baculi family decided to produce more and offer them for free. The offer was posted in various social media platforms and it elicits positive response, some were asking for their shares while others made counteroffer of raw materials.

As of this writing, the family has produced some 3,400 improvised face shields. These were distributed to Cagayan Valley Medical Center and De Leon Clinic in Tuguegaraw City, Nuestra Senora de Post Hospital in Piar town, and Tuao District Hospital in Tuao.

Local personnel of the Bureau of Fire Protection in Tuguegaraw City and the towns of Piat, Penablanca and Pamplona in Cagayan, and in Cabagan, Isabela were also supplied with the same face shields, as well as the regional office of the Department of Agriculture.

Tandang Sora, or Melchora Aquino in real life, helped the Katipuneros in 19th century during the Spanish -Filipino war in the fight for Philippine independence by providing food, medicine and shelter while nursing her wounded countrymen.
