The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) recently turned over P25,918,880 worth of farm-to-market road in Barangay Ampusongan to boost the economic activities in Bakun, Benguet.
The 5.3 kilometer road, with 3,364 meters of gutter and 18 lines of culvert, will provide farmers easier access to the market to open up more business opportunities for their farm products.
Provincial Agrarian Reform Officer II Robert Ampaguey said the road project is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the Agrarian Reform Infrastructure Support Project phase III (ARISP III).
“The local government’s role in this project is to maintain the road for at least another 10 years. The local government also plans to construct additional curb and gutters or repair scoured portions to prevent destruction of the road,” Ampaguey said.
Mayor Faustino Labinio, on his part, encouraged the farmers to produce better quality of cabbage, one of their major crops, to take advantage of the road and bring more products to the market.
“I also urge you (the farmers) to take care of the road. If the culvert are clogged, you should fix it yourselves and should not wait for the government to do it for you,” Labinio added.
On the other hand, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) District 2 Provincial Engineer Dominador Daway said 10 percent or P2.2 million of the project cost has been retained for corrections or repair in case defects occur until its liability period expires after February 2014.
