CBCP asked to reconsider stand on CARP

ze16A farmers’ group has asked Catholic bishops to reconsider their position on the government’s CARP. The KMP told the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) that the CARP is set to expire in 2014 and that the Aquino administration and the landlords are calling for the extension of what they allege is an anti-peasant law.

The KMP said the CBCP is supporting the government’s CARP, as it claimed that the program has worsened when it was amended into CARPer.

The government has distributed more public lands than those owned by landlords, the KMP told the CBCP.

Farmers call for genuine reform

Farmers belonging to the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas called on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines to revisit its stand on the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program.
In an appeal, the group said “CARP is set to expire in 2014 and the Aquino administration, big landlords, and their special agents are now in chorus to again extend the anti-peasant law.”

“The Hacienda Luisita is a testament to CARP’s failure as it was unable to address landlessness, poverty, hunger, social injustice, oppression and deception in the country,” said KMP General SecretaryAntonio Flores.
Flores said “the bogus CARP was not meant to break land monopoly and was instead implemented only to appease peasant unrest in the countryside and to create an illusion of land reform.”
