More than 1,000 farmers jumped for joy upon receiving their certificate of land
ownership awards (CLOAs) from the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) in Agusan
del Norte and Agusan del Sur.
Four hundred seventy two (472) agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) shared 760
hectares of farmland in Las Nieves, Agusan del Norte while 517 farmer-beneficiaries
received their share of 2,478 hectares in Sibagat, Agusan del Sur.
DAR Regional Director Faisar Mambuay urged the farmers to undergo agricultural
trainings given by DAR to help them increase their yield in the coming crop seasons.
“This is part of our commitment to improve our farmers’ lives. If the farmers improve,
the community will, too,” Mambuay said.
The 472 ARBs in Las Nieves town, all belonging to Katimalibon and Rossanim agrarian
reform communities (ARCs), got a bonus when their newly awarded lands became
the object of an agreement between Del Monte Corporation and La Agusana Fruit
International Inc., on one hand, and the Las Nieves municipal government, on the
other, to develop the same into world class banana plantations.
Also part of the agreement, Agusan del Norte Governor Reinario Rosales said, is
that Del Monte and La Agusana Fruit International and the two ARCs would become
trading partners with the multinational corporations becoming sole buyers of the
farmer-beneficiaries’ harvests.
“This business venture will help promote the socio-economic activities of our farmers.
This will also strengthen public and private partnership and generate secondary
industries that will contribute to the development of these remote communities,”
Rosales added.
“With these two top fruit producers in the country as ready buyers, this project will
greatly help uplift the economic status of the farmers. This will also create other
employment for the members of their family,” Mambuay said.
