Farmers in Zamboanga del Sur are the latest beneficiaries of the infrastructure projects of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) as the agency intensifies the delivery of support services to agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs).
DAR Secretary Virgilio de los Reyes recently led the groundbreaking of a P46.3-million farm-to-market road and turned over a health station and farm machineries in the municipality of Tigbao, Zamboanga del Sur.
“These infrastructure support services are meant to increase the farm productivity of agrarian reform beneficiaries,” De los Reyes said.
The Begcalli Agrarian Reform Community Health Station worth P1.09 million and the concreting of the 5.8-kilometer Begong-Limas farm-to-market road will benefit some 300 agrarian reform beneficiaries and 6,439 local residents.
According to DAR Regional Director Julita Ragandang, the Begong and Limas roads are rocky and becomes very muddy when it rains.
“This road project will lessen the travel time and transport coast of farmers and will also help residents in going from town to town with ease,” Ragandang said.
“The DAR also provided the Begcalli health station so that our farmers local residents need not have to go to the town proper for medical attention, “added Ragandang.
De los Reyes also turned over 15 units of various farm machineries worth P3.16 million to nine farmers’ organizations where some 4,800 are agrarian reform beneficiaries.
The farm equipment consisting of a harvester, hand tractors, reapers and threshers were given under DAR’s Agrarian Reform Community Connectivity and Economic Support Services (ARCCESS) which aims to transform ARBs into viable entrepreneurs by providing them with support services to increase their income and farming capabilities.
“These modern equipment, will greatly help our farmers till their land faster and more efficiently, and will help in decreasing loses in production and increasing their yield and income,” said de los Reyes.
“ARCCESS seeks to strengthen farmers’ organizations where a lot of our ARBs are members. If farmers’ organizations are thriving, then our ARB’s chance of a better life is bigger,” said de los Reyes.
