The flood control projects are under the DAR’s Bottoms Up Budgeting (BUB) Projects which aims to avoid disasters from happening to farmers and residents in rural communities.

The DAR implemented the two flood control dikes in Matuog and Magtuhao rivers in Tayasan and another three dikes in Barangays Poblacion, tambojangin and Bio-os in Amlan under the BUB project.
“Flooding has become a natural occurrence here during rainy season. In the past few years alone, probably because of climate change, the rains and typhoons were much stronger and harsher, making the Amlan river and Tayasan’s rivers—Matuog and Magtuhao, overflow and wreak havoc to farms and farming communities,” said Regional Director Alejandro Otacan.

“Now that dikes are built, flooding especially along agrarian communities hopefully will be minimized, if not averted. It will also help reduce damages on houses and infrastructures. Most of all, farmers and residents will no longer be worried every time there is a precipitation,” added Otacan.

The DAR’s BUB Projects focus on climate change adaptation, mitigation and disaster preparedness in rural communities.

Present during the turnover rites were Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer Louie L. Naranjo, Chief of Program Beneficiaries Development Division Grace F. Mapili, Tayasan Mayor Susano L. Ruperto, Jr, Mayor Bentham P. de la Cruz, Vice Mayor Gino P. de la Cruz, municipal and barangay officials. (Gherelene Mae B. Rafols)
