The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) recently turned over a P159,000 worth of community-managed potable water supply, sanitation and hygiene (CP-WASH) project to Esperanza Farmers Association (ESFA) in Esperanza, Aloquinsan, Cebu to increase farmers income in the area.
Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer II, Elvira B. Bation said the project is composed of the provision of one biogas (5 cu. m.), one rain collector (5 cu. m.), one iron removal filter, and two biosand filter.
Bation said the DAR-Cebu project gained financial support and counterpart fund from the local government unit (LGU) and Esperanza Farmers Association.
“Methane is one of the most valuable components of biogas as it can replace the conventional use of fuels like kerosene and firewood and can substitute almost the required consumption of firewood in the rural household,” Bation said.
She said that with the project now providing unlimited supply of fuel through the biogas, and with the construction of potable water system, it is expected that the association can gain additional profit from the catering and hog raising business they are venturing.
“The output from the digester (digested waste) is actually a high quality organic liquid fertilizer. ESFA sells it at P20 per gallon to non-members, while members are given a discounted price of P15/gallon. Farmers also need not buy expensive and hazardous chemical fertilizers with this organic liquid fertilizer.” Bation added.
She encouraged them to work hard and make their land productive and assured them that more support services will be provided by the DAR to their association in the coming years.
During the turnover ceremony, Certificates of Training were given to four farmers who have successfully attended and completed the hands-on training of para-engineers on CP-WASH Project. They are now called Para-Engineers.
These new group of para-engineers are tasked to assist other farmers in their area for them to have their own source of potable water supply and biogas project.
Also present during the turn-over and acceptance ceremony held at the ESFA Training Center, Esperanza, Aloguinsan, Cebu, were the Vice Mayor and Councilors of the Municipality of Aloguinsan, Cebu, MARPO Nestor Castro, Barangay Captain of Esperanza, Aloguinsan, Hon. Guadalupe Lapina, other barangay officials, and the Officers and Members of the Esperanza Farmers Association headed by their President, Ms. Susana G. Laña. (Yuna Elluza D. Kintanar)
