Agrarian Reform Undersecretary Rosalina Bistoyong commended the family farming in the country for its role in providing food security and protecting our natural resources through natural farming during the opening ceremony of photo-exhibit in celebration of the 2014 International Year of Family Farming (IYFF) held in the Department of Agriculture (DA)last May 26.
“The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and the DA worked together to make this event possible to give our farming families greater recognition for the efforts they provide in feeding the Filipino people,” Bistoyong said.
Bistoyong added that the IYFF would empower farming families in the country because family farming’s involvement in responding to the urgency of food security will be promoted not just in the Philippines but worldwide.
IYFF was launched on November 22, 2013 by the United Nations and the Food and Agriculture Organizations (FAO) in New York to highlight the importance of farming families in food security and in protecting our environment.
The IYFF aims to promote active policies in favor of sustainable development of agricultural systems based on farmer families, communal units, indigenous groups, cooperatives and fishing families, to strengthen the legitimacy of rural and farmers associations; and, to increase awareness of the importance of supporting family farming as a sustainable and effective way of producing food worldwide.
