DAR tackles help for small farmers

visayan dailyThe Department of Agrarian Reform-Negros Island Region hosted a two-day technical working group gathering with other provincial offices to discuss the development of the Linking Small Farmers to Market project in partnership with the Catholic Relief Services at the DAR office in Bacolod City recently. The Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officers II from Regions 4-A, 5, 6, and NIR assessed the improvement of the support services delivery and the accomplishment of the project in the past year.

LinksFarM, a partnership project that links agrarian reform beneficiaries, integrates the supply chain and utilizes the eight steps in agro-enterprise clustering approach by the CRS to increase the production and income of ARBs and their household through agricultural extension, marketing assistance, and capacity building.

In Negros Occidental, the implanted projects include beans, cut-flower and egg production, that promote adoption of the intercropping system and modular approach for sugarcane with mongo, change in direction, and mindset from pure sugarcane to diversified and rotational farming, and to establish relationship with buyers.

The DAR-funded project is also supported by the department by coordinating with concerned field offices from the local governing units and other stakeholders.

Meanwhile, CRS provides the counterpart fund as leverage for salaries and benefits, and leads the generation of support from the LGUs and stakeholders.

CRS also serves as the implementing agency and DAR acts as chair of the Project Steering Committee and the Technical Working Group for LinksFarM . *KBC
