DAR unveils organic fertilizer processing center in Bago City

sunstarTHE Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) in Negros Occidental, in partnership with the City Government of Bago and Friends of the Highlands Agrarian Reform Cooperative (FHARC), launched the Village Level Processing Center Enhancement Project for its assisted-agrarian reform beneficiary organization at Sitio Tabidiao in Barangay Mailum, Bago City on Wednesday, May 3.

Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer II Lucrecia Taberna said the project is under the agency’s village-level farm-focused enterprise development (VLFED) program.

Taberna said the DAR allocated P300,000 for the trainings and construction of the processing center.

The FHARC, meanwhile, shared P50,000 as an additional budget for the construction of the processing center while the city government provided P40,000 as counterpart for labor expenses.

Taberna said the project will help the FHARC in producing and marketing their organic fertilizers which will benefit the organization’s 45 farmer-members.

It also includes components like preparation of documentary requirements, capability development building activities, construction of the processing center, and ensuring raw materials sustainability.

“The VLFED is implemented in line with the agency’s continuing thrusts like strengthening the agri-enterprises of ARBs and their organization, and enabling them to sustain the productivity of their awarded lands,” Taberna said.

Establishing farm-focused community enterprises which promote value adding activities to their major and secondary crops also allows the participation of other community members in the livelihood activities within the value chain and increase their household income, she added.

Mayor Nicholas Yulo said the project is aligned with the campaign of the provincial government to position Negros Occidental as the organic capital of the country.

This will also help in addressing the pressing problem on climate change, Yulo added.

The launching and turnover ceremony was also attended by DAR-Negros Occidental personnel, representatives of partner-agencies, and other city and barangay officials. (EPN)
