Agrarian reform beneficiaries undergo skills training

Web BinakolMembers of the San Jose Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte, underwent a skills training on hi-speed sewing machine operation to enhance and upgrade their skills in producing sewed and embroidered items called Binakol crafts.

Chief Agrarian Reform Program Officer Teresita T. Acang said “the department sees the need for these agrarian reform beneficiaries to upgrade their skills to prepare them for a larger market for their Binakol products.”

“There’s a big market in these crafts. Binakol crafts like bags, fans, hats, table runners, etc., are very popular here. A lot of people buy them to be sold in the market and souvenir shops. Tourists and balikbayans buy them as pasalubong and souvenirs,” added Acang.

According to Acang, the San Jose MPC whose members are mostly agrarian reform beneficiaries, have been engaged in the Binakol crafts production since 2011. Under the Agrarian Reform Infrastructure Support Projects (ARISP), the DAR in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the local government of Sarrat, conducted a series of trainings in producing Binakol crafts.

“With the hi-speed sewing machines of the San Jose MPC, and the enhancement and upgrading of their skills in sewing and embroidery, they are now ready to embark on a bigger market,” Acang said. (Rommel Aquino)
