Farming community gets potable water facilities from DAR

WEB NATL R01 CPWASH 01One hundred twenty five farming households of Kampana agrarian reform community (ARC) in Galimuyod, Ilocos Sur will now be safe from water-borne diseases as the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) recently completed three potable water supply systems in three barangays of the ARC.

The project, implemented under the Community-managed Potable Water Supply Sanitation and Hygiene (CP-WASH), is a collaborative effort among DAR, Philippine Center for Water and Sanitation and the Galimuyod municipal government to provide safe drinking water, and promote proper hygiene in areas with high incidence of water-borne diseases

“Each CP-WASH water facility consists of a biogas digester, iron removal filter, bio-sand filter and rain water collector. These were constructed and installed in Barangays McKinley, Kilang and Mabayag,” said Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer Christianne Suguitan.

Suguitan said the iron removal filters and bio-sand filters are low-cost and indigenous-based potable water supply technologies designed for areas with high incidence of water-borne diseases, while the bio-gas digester is a sanitation facility that produces methane gas from livestock manure and human wastes and converts it to liquefied petroleum gas for cooking.

“The iron removal filter, rain water collector and bio-sand filter will solve the problem of water impurities in Kilang and McKinley, while the biogas digester will address the sanitation problem in Mabayag,” Suguitan said.

Ten farmers belonging to 10 agrarian reform cooperatives were chosen to attend a 10-day training for the installation and construction of the CP-WASH facilities. The local government of Galimuyod provided P50,000.00 worth of construction materials while the DAR spent P80,000.00 for the orientation and trainings of the 10 farmers. The Kilang Multi-purpose Cooperative (KMPC) and barangay officials of McKinley shouldered the wages of the 10 ARB members who constructed and installed the CP-WASH facilities. (Carina Muñoz)
