Two agrarian products recognized in the Kannawidan Festival in Region 01

Z Z WEB REGL 20160407 R01 REXY PH01Two agrarian reform community (ARC) products, the nata de coco in pandan flavor and sigay robusta coffee developed under the supervision of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) gained recognition in the recently conducted 9th Ylocos Kannawidan Festival in Ilocos Sur.

DAR Regional Director Homer P. Tobias said the products were developed through the joint efforts of the DAR and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in coordination with the city government of Candon and the local government unit of Sigay.

He said the nata de coco in pandan flavor was a product of Candon City Coconut Farmers Agrarian Reform Cooperative, Kandongan ARC of Candon City and was adjudged as the most innovative product.

He added that the Sigay robusta coffee was an enterprise of Sigay Coffee Growers Association, Pagimbagan ARC, Sigay, Ilocos Sur and was the most improved entry under the one town one product (OTOP).

Tobias said the nata de coco in pandan flavor was improved through the up-valuing project of ARC products while the robusta coffee was developed through the village level processing center enhancement project (VLPCEP).

Tobias added that the DAR provided funds for the improvement of the processing center of the two products and trainings on capability building, product quality improvement and market access enhancement in collaboration with the DTI.

Through the trainings, the agrarian reform beneficiary organizations (ARBOs) were able to assess their current status, improved and upgraded their business operations and their products and they were able to do market linkaging with local pasalubong centers, local markets and trade fairs.

Aside from the Certificates, the two ARBOs were also given cash rewards of Php10,000.00 for Candon City Coconut Farmers AR Cooperative and Php15,000.00 for Sigay Coffee Growers Association handed by Vice Governor DV Savellano, Senator Cynthia Villar, Manager of Sigay CGA, Governor Ryan Luis V. Singson and Board Member Jerry C. Singson.

The Kannawidan Ylocos Festival is a weeklong festivity to commemorate the separation of Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte, which, 92 years ago was known as Ilocos Province. It is also a celebration to showcase the culture, arts, tradition and products of the different municipalities. (Carina R Munoz)
