DAR reviews agrarian reform beneficiaries in Ilocos

PIAnewlogo2017SAN FERNANDO CITY,June 16 (PIA) – An updating of profiles among agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) nationwide to include those from Ilocos region is the marching order of Department of Agrarian Reform Secretary Rafael “Ka Paeng” Mariano. Virgilio Acuña, regional director of DAR Region 1, said that this order aims to know the current situations of farmer-beneficiaries.

“This is to check if they still own the lands awarded to them by the Department and if their lives have improved with these lots that served as their home and for cultivation,” Acuña said in the “Ammuentayo” radio program of the Philippine Information Agency – La Union.

Based on Republic Act 6657 or the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Law, once identified as qualified beneficiaries, the recipients were provided certificates of land ownership award (CLOA) as a proof of ownership and given security of tenure.

“DAR always requires ARBs to make sure that these agricultural lands awarded them will be fully utilized as their home lot and for agricultural production,” Acuña said.

He emphasized that any move to transfer the land ownership by beneficiaries would mean perpetually disqualifying them from being an ARB, especially if they have not met the agreed 10- year holding period.

In La Union, Lawyer and Program Officer Raul Laluan reported that they have awarded 19,257 hectares of land to a total of 22,744 ARBs with 18,036 CLOAs, some have collective titles.

“The land area distributed is even more than the 19,247 hectares land scope listed in the DAR database,” Laluan said.

Apart from land acquisition and distribution, the DAR also provides support services to the farmers such helping them promote their products to ensure a bigger market and have these products displayed in big events like trade fairs nationwide.

“We have variety of local products that need to be developed, so we partner with other government agencies for ‘convergence strategy’ to further uplift the quality of life of our beneficiaries,” Laluan said. (JNPD/MPA/PIA-1, La Union)
