P35.7M irrigation facility for Cagayan

manilatimes 1RIZAL, Cagayan: The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) in Region 2 has turned over an irrigation facility worth P35.7 million to farmers in this far-flung municipality. Lawyer Marjorie Ayson, Region 2 DAR Director, said that the Mauanan Communal Irrigation System (MCIS) is expected to create significant change in the lives of agrarian reform beneficiaries, particularly those of the Malaueg Agrarian Reform Community in the town.

Funded under the DAR-Agrarian Reform Infrastructure Project Phase III, the MCIS will irrigate this town’s farmlands in barangays Maunan, Iluru Sur, Iluru Norte, Gagabutan East and Gagabutan West to include the neighboring barangays of Gaddangao and Baluncanag.

“The MCIS is capable of supplying the needed irrigation water to more than 140 hectares of farmlands and will benefit some 1,060 households with some 5,644 agrarian reform beneficiaries in the town,” Ayson said.

P13M for Kalinga farmers

In Kalinga, P13 million worth of farm implements from the national government was allotted to help farmers in the province recover their losses caused by the effects of the long dry spell in the province.

Provincial Agriculturist Domingo Bakilan said the financial assistance will come from the El Niño Mitigation Program of the Department of Agriculture (DA) intended to help the country’s agriculture sector cope with the effects of extreme climatic change.

“The amount shall be downloaded to the provincial government for the procurement of certified rice, corn and vegetable seeds, mechanized water pump sets and livestock,” Bakikan said.

The DA said the aid will be distributed to partner-farmers associations duly registered with agency through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist.

There are many farmers in Kalinga already reeling from missed cropping because of the long water cut-off caused by a major rehabilitation project on the Upper Chico River Irrigation System.
