Harvest Festival on Red Rice in Cavite

WEB NATL 20151027 R04 CAVITE 01The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) has recently conducted a “harvest festival on organic upland (red) rice” in a 3,500 square meters demo farm of United Caragao Farmers Inc. (UCFI) in Sitio Malinta, Barangay Sampaloc II, Dasmarinas, Cavite.

Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer (PARPO) II James Arthur T. Dubongco said the project is in partnership with Multi-Sectoral Management and Development Corporation (MMDC), which is responsible for introducing the organic upland (red) rice production in the area.

He said Cavite is blessed with four Agrarian Reform Community Connectivity and Economic Support Services (ARCCESS) sub-projects for Batch 2 focusing on rice, vegetable and cassava production.

Dubongco added that the project is DAR’s strategic intervention to retain the awarded lands of agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) through increased production and engagement in agri-based and related enterprises.

Generoso Lumbres, Crop Specialist of MMDC said it is projected that for one-hectare techno demo organic-red rice production, farmers’ net income will be Php208,845 compared to inorganic red rice of Php165,750.

He added that the red rice commands higher price per kilo, thus, encouraging farmer-beneficiaries to increase farm productivity.

UCFI President Enrique M. Paras thanked the DAR  for its relentless support to them.
