Palawan farmers undergo business planning workshop

Chief Agrarian Reform Program Officer Rogelio Madarcos said “the workshop aims to broaden the farmers’ perspective in business planning and development to help them in improving their competitive performance in the market.”

Madarcos said that the nine cooperatives were recipients of DAR’s farm mechanization program implemented under the Agrarian Reform Community Connectivity and Economic Support Services (ARCCESS).

“The workshop was very timely for these cooperatives. The skills they learned in the workshop will greatly help them in the operation and management of the farm machines the department turned over to them,” said Madarcos.

Prior to the business planning workshop, the DAR had turned over farm tractors, rice threshers and other mechanized machines to the nine cooperatives.

Resource Speaker Chairman Ariodear C. Rico of the Board of Agricultural Engineer, highlighted the National Agricultural and Fishery Mechanization Program of the government. “The country is faced with issues on poverty and food security. To address that, there really is a need for mechanization,” Rico said.

According to Rico, the three-day workshop employed a lecture-workshop approach. Each organization came up with the final rental rates for the use of the facilities during major farm activities such as land preparation and threshing.

“To entice members to avail of the farm machines, discounted rental rates which are lower than existing rental rates in the locality shall be offered only to members,” said Rico.

Farmer Bienvenido Dayao, Manager of CK-Plus Multi-Purpose Cooperative, was very thankful to the Department for providing them with the equipment and imparting the skills needed for them to handle and operate the equipment to earn profit.

The next batches of training are scheduled on October 19-21 for farmers of Occidental and Marinduque provinces. (Gefelyn A. Goleng)
