Mamburao farmers say no to El Niño

Z Z WEB 20160226 NATL R04 OCMIN PINXMAMBURAO, OCCIDENTAL MINDORO—The El Niño phenomenon is taking its toll on the country’s farming sector, but 19 farmers’ organizations got a big relief after the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) turned over shallow tube wells to each of them.

DAR Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer Luisito A. Jacinto said the shallow tube wells would irrigate 132.5 hectares of rain-dependent rice fields in barangays Tayamaan, San Luis and Tangkalan, Talabaan and Fatima. “Of the total 4,253.5 hectares of rice fields in the town, only 2,016 hectares are irrigated,” Jacinto added.

“Farmers here depend on rain for irrigation. With the El Niño in our midst, rice production has declined. The DAR’s provision of irrigation devices will surely be a big help in increasing production, and income of Mamburao farmers,” said Jacinto.

One of the beneficiaries, farmer Ernesto Concepcion of Barangay Tangkalan expressed his gratefulness for the irrigation units. “We are very thankful to the government for providing us these shallow tube wells non of us could afford to buy.”

The provision of shallow tube wells was implemented under DAR’s Bottom-Up Budgeting project and in partnership with the local government of Mamburao. The turn-over was held in Mamburao Municipal Gymnasium on February 4, 2016. (Kenneth Rae N. Alvaro)
