The Government recently distributed P1.67 million worth of shallow tube wells in the municipality of Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro which are expected to increase farmer incomes by 5%-10%.
In a statement released last week by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), a total of 19 shallow tube wells were turned over to rain-dependent rice farmers in Barangays Tayamaan, San Luis, Tangkalan, Talabaan and Fatima.
An official from the DAR in Mindoro clarified to BusinessWorld that the 19 shallow tube wells would irrigate some 100 hectares of rain-dependent rice fields, as against the 2,000 stated in DAR’s Web site.
“Of the total 4,253.5 hectares of rice fields in the town, only 2,016 hectares are irrigated,” DAR Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer Luisito A. Jacinto said in the statement.
Through the local government of Mamburao and the Bottom-Up Budgeting (BUB), the provision of irrigation devices will boost production and income of the 1,983 Mamburao farmers, added Jacinto.
This year, P24.7 billion was allocated to the BUB program which will cover 14,325 local projects which will be directed to all 42,036 barangays next year.
