Palawan farmers graduate from DAR’s farm business school

Z Z WEB 20160309 NATL R04 PINX PH2Thirty farmers in Palawan are now proud graduates of the Farm Business School (FBS) established by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) to develop their farm enterprises and make their business operations profitable.
DAR Provincial Agrarian Program Reform Officer Conrado Guevarra said the farmers from the agrarian reform community of Dumarao in the municipality of Roxas were tutored on basic business concepts and effective farming practices.
“The farmers underwent 25 learning sessions held every Friday for five consecutive months. In those sessions, they were also taught on bookkeeping, cash flows, value addition, market surveys, selling and costing,” said Guevarra.
“The business techniques they learned in the FBS will greatly help them in managing their produce and agri-products as it goes out in the market,” added Guevarra.
Region Resource Speaker Dr. Elmer T. Ferry of the Department of Agriculture (DA) said that FBS is an eye-opener for the farmer-students.  “In the school, we taught and made them understand that they are entrepreneurs. They are society’s food producer and not just a farm owner who merely digs the soil, sows the seeds, harvests and sells their crops and products.”

“Now that their knowledge on business is broadened, they can now stand up and speak up to their buyers. They negotiate better now that they understand business terms and practices,” said Ferry.
The FBS program of the DAR was implemented in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture and funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The FBS was established on August last year in the province of Palawan. (Fedeleo L. De Guzman)
