“With the El Nino in our midst, farmers’ production has declined. Naturally, their household income declined too. To address their need for additional income, the department introduced raising tilapia,” said Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer Isagani Placido.

The DAR tapped the services of aquaculture experts from the Marinduque State College to give a crash course on tilapia-raising to 20 agrarian reform beneficiary members of the SPFWA. The farmers were taught on the modern and proper ways of breeding, feeding and fish pond management.

Facilitator and aquaculture expert Dean Paloma de Chavez said tilapia fish farming is a suitable means for farmers to earn extra income because “tilapia are hardy fishes. With proper care, they can survive the intense heat we are experiencing now. Also, they are easy to breed and grow very quickly.”

Farmer Ernie Palomares expressed his gratitude for the training. “Napakalaking tulong ng training na ito dahil maaari nang madagdagan and aming kita sa pag-nenegosyo ng tilapia.”

“At dahil malayo kami sa dagat, maka-bibili na ang aming mga ka-barangay ng sariwang tilapia sa anumang oras na naisin nila sa mababang presyo,” Palomares added.

The two-day training was held on March 30-31, 2016 at MSC Gasan Campus, Banuyo, Gasan, Marinduque. (Alejandro Bunag)
