DAR raises the value of farmers’ ginger tea product

news reg 1 pix 1 sept. 23 2016The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) is pushing the farmer-members of Magdiwang Agrarian Reform Multi-Purpose Cooperative (MARC MPC) to raise the quality of their ginger tea to generate extra income and employment for the members of the cooperative.

MARC MPC is the recipient organization of value-adding project under the Agrarian Reform Communities Project (ARCP) funded by the Asian Development Bank.

The DAR tapped the expertise of Operations Manager Meriam G. Santos of SAM-SAMMI Herbal Products who trained 12 farmer-members of the MARC MPC in food processing training on ginger production, processing, packaging, costing and marketing.

Santos shared her expertise from the extraction of native ginger, cooking, powdering to packaging. “At first, all processes involved were observed after which each participants had a chance to actually apply all their learning,” Santos said.news reg 1 pix 2 sept. 23 2016

Ms. Luz Rabo, chairman of the committee on ginger processing of MARC MPC, very much appreciated the training. “We are so lucky to be assisted by DAR because this training made us realize the value of ginger. With the 50 kg of native ginger we are able to process it into 51 kg of ginger tea ready for marketing unlike before that we keep on producing ginger tea without proper process being followed. Now we can encourage and teach other members to process ginger tea to increase the production volume.”

“This enterprise is expected to benefit 665 members of our cooperative once operationalized,” Ms. Rabo added. (Gefelyn A. Goleng)
