DAR provides carabaos, piglets to Zamboanga Sibugay farmers

business mirrorTHE Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), in partnership with the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (Opapp), launched a livestock-dispersal project to boost farmers income in Zamboanga Sibugay.

The project, dubbed Payapa at Masaganang Pamayanan-Agrarian Reform Areas (Pamana-ARA), paved the way for the initial distribution of eight female carabaos to the Samonte Strong Farmers Association and 14 piglets to the Samonte Rural Improvement Club in Samonte, Talusan, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Aside from helping them obtain additional income, the project’s main objective is to provide farmers with carabaos and help them cultivate their lands, DAR Provincial Agrarian Reform Officer lawyer Judith Patriarca-Mantos said.

Mantos said the eight female carabaos, aged two to three years old, were distributed among the members of the Samonte Strong Farmers Association who do not have a working animal. The first calves of these carabaos shall be owned by recipient-farmers, while the mother carabao shall be dispersed again to other farmers for breeding.

“This will be done in a cycle until every member of the association will have their own carabao that would help them in their farm chores,” Mantos said.

The DAR and Opapp also provided 14 piglets to the members of the Samonte Rural Improvement Club, an association whose members are all woman-farmers.

Mantos said the piglets shall be managed by the members of the women’s club. The pig pen shall be constructed by the members of the club themselves and the materials for the pig pen, the piglets and feeds shall be provided by the Pamana-ARA Fund.

“All members of the association will work on rotation schedule for the management, care and maintenance of the piggery project,” Mantos said.

“It is only fitting that women get to be provided with a livelihood project like this because they contribute as much as the men in tilling the land and improving the income of their families.”
