DAR, LGU in Magarao, CamSur to establish quail egg production project

news reg pix 1 may 2 2016The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) recently proposed to establish a Quail Raising and Egg Production Project in Bgy. Carangcang in partnership with the local government unit (LGU) of Magarao, Camarines Sur.

Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer (PARPO) Gay L. Labad said the project will be managed by De la Paz-Carangcang Irrigators Association.

Labad said the project aims to boost quail raising in a village-level which involves 277-strong farmer-members and other members of their families to provide them with additional source of income.

She added that in an earlier consultation meeting, irrigator’s association president Jose M. de la Cruz supported the objective and concept of quail raising and the potential of quail farming in providing added income and opportunity for its members.

Labad said DAR will allocate funds for the trainings and project administrative expenses. The LGU will give an equity share to provide quail’s housing requirements, feeds and purchase of an initial 1,000 egg layers, while the association’s members will share the cost of labor in the construction of cages.

Trainer-consultant Jake Labay said quail raising is one of the most promising livelihoods in the country as the demand for cheap eggs and meat is high, with no compromise to health benefits.

“Quail eggs and meat are also good sources of protein and can be started with small capital investment compared to chicken and ducks. It also offers quick financial cycles that lead to quicker returns,“ he added.

“Quail, locally known as pugo, require minimal space, time, and investment. Moreover, they are quick growers, fast multipliers, and very efficient in converting feeds to egg and meat, “Labay said. (GCBuensalida)
