DAR briefs gov’t agencies on caravan for rural women

news reg 1 pix 1 oct. 25 2017NAGA CITY (Oct. 25, 2017)--The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) will conduct tomorrow the first leg of the DAR’s gender and development (GAD) project called Caravan for Rural Women. 

Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer Gay Labad said the caravan seeks to provide farmers, particularly the women on their basic rights and services; and to protect women farmers and their children against violence in various forms. 

“The caravan aims to inform the rural folks, especially the women, in what the government can offer them in terms of services. We invited various government agencies to join us in going from town to town providing and informing the rural folks of what their rights are and what they can avail from each government agency,” Labad said.

According to GAD Secretariat Head Atty. Althea Oliveros, the Caravan for Rural Women targets to serve at least 500 women farmer-beneficiaries and their families in the Bicol region alone.news reg 1 pix 2 oct. 25 2017

“This endeavor seeks to serve the rural womenfolk and their families not only with government services but also by informing them of their rights and how to protect themselves from abuse and violence,” Oliveros said.

Oliveros said the first leg of the caravan will be tomorrow, Oct. 26, in the municipality of Calabanga in Naga. The succeeding leg will be conducted in Sorsogon, Leyte, Northern Samar and Southern Leyte.

The caravan will be ably assisted by the local government represented by Municipal Councilor Levi Sta. Ana. 

In the briefing, each government agencies pledged services they will offer on this first leg of the caravan.

National Police (PNP), Phil Health, Bureau of Soils, the Office of the Presidential Affairs on Peace Process (OPAP) and the local government units.  (pinky roque)
