Around 100 coconut farmers who belong to the people's organizations & cooperatives of the Ugnayan ng mga Magsasaka sa Kaniyogan ng Albay or UgMaKA attended the Coconut Farmers' Congress at Casa Basilisa Resort in Guinobatan, Albay, March 19, 2014.
Said Congress was a collaborative effort between the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) that aimed at strengthening the partnership among coconut organizations in order to create a strong marketing niche of copra for biodiesel production that will ensure the welfare of coconut farmers by increasing their farm income. Likewise, to call for a strong government support for the welfare of the coconut farmers engaged in copra and biodiesel production.
The one day activity had forged agreements among the UgMaKA-member POs/Coops in the procurement, consolidation and marketing of copra produce as feedstock for biodiesel production; and finalized the UgMaKA's Project Proposal on Copra Buying/Trading as Livelihood Project to be funded by SAWP.
SAWP or Social Amelioration & Welfare Program is a program under the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) which gives livelihood support to coconut farmers and organizations involved in biodiesel production.
