DAR builds P2.75-million irrigation system in Masbate

manilatimes 1In line with the government’s effort to increase rice production in rain-fed areas, the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) has turned over a P2.75-million communal irrigation system (CIS) covering over 100 hectares in Mobo, Masbate.

DAR Bicol Regional Director Luis Bueno Jr. said Barangay Saga–wsawan of this town would greatly benefit from the CIS to address problems caused by drought and the El Niño phenomenon.

“These rain-fed farms are expected to become more productive,” Bueno said, adding that the Sagawsawan-Mobo Irrigators Association will now operate the said CIS.

Bueno said that 40 percent of the total amount was funded through DAR’s Agrarian Reform Infrastructure Support Project Phase III (ARISP III) and 60 percent through equity provided by the local government unit of Mobo. The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) provided technical assistance and will implement the project.

Bueno added that the CIS was made possible through the efforts of DAR, Mobo officials and NIA. This will bring a positive impact to the government’s food security program and will help boost the country’s economic development.

“The project gave us a flow of life but we must conserve water so that more residents and farmers will benefit,” Mobo Mayor Percival Castillo said during the turnover ceremony.

NIA irrigation engineer Helsy Bermudez said the completed project is expected to improve crop productivity, especially in Agrarian Reform Communities (ARCs) in Barangays Lalaguna, Umabay Interior and Exterior, and Pina–malatican.
