DAR allots P8.3M for Negros scholars

visayan dailyThe allotment for the Programang Agraryo Iskolar of the Department of Agrarian Reform of Negros Occidental has reached P8.3 million as of this year.

DAR 1 assistant coordinator Aisha Ardiente said the program is considered a success and a boon to the children of agrarian reform beneficiaries of the province. The program has produced 133 graduates with four attaining magna cum laude and 22 cum laude honors.

Ardiente said the program started in 2003 for the poor but deserving dependents of agrarian reform beneficiaries. It provides free scholarships for agriculture courses in State Universities and Colleges, she said.

She said Negros Occidental has the most number of scholars in the country and has the highest allocation from the DAR secretary. A scholar receives an allowance of P7,750 per semester and must maintain a general average of 80 percent.

The department provides graduates of the PAI are provided employment after graduation with the majority in agriculture related jobs, Ardiente added.*MNM
