DAR fights violence against women, too

panaynewsKALIBO, Aklan – Violence against women (VAW) in agrarian reform communities – this is another concern of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Region 6.

In Aklan, DAR has set a series of activities that aims for zero VAW and violence against children, too.

It has a Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Point System that implement these,

The United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women defines VAW as any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.

VAW encompasses, but is not limited to the following – physical, sexual and psychological violence occurring in the family, including battering, sexual abuse of female children in the household, dowry-related violence, marital rape, female genital mutilation and other traditional practices harmful to women, non-spousal violence and violence related to exploitation.

Just this Nov. 25, the National Consciousness Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Children, DAR-Aklan kicked off a series of activities consistent with the theme, “End VAW Now! It’s our Duty!”

The activities will run for 18 days, said Ma. Teresa Valencia, provincial agrarian reform officer.

Together with Aklanon advocates, DAR joined the “Walk to End VAW” led by Vice Gov. Gabrielle Quimpo,

A series of lectures on the VAW law was also started. It will end on Dec. 12.

Meanwhile, the Men Opposed to Violence Against Women Everywhere (MOVE) of DAR-Aklan will convene for the 5th MOVE Provincial Congress in Malinao, Aklan.

The MOVE DAR-Aklan Chapter is among the active chapters in the locality expanding its membership to agrarian reform communities.

MOVE seeks to educate men in the barangays on their crucial roles in eliminating violence against women and children./PN
