Regional Director Stephen Leonidas said the farm machines would help modernize sugarcane farming in Negros Occidental.

The DAR distributed 13 heavy tractors, 18 shredders and 12 rice threshers worth P72 million to 27 agrarian reform beneficiaries organizations (ARBOs) in Negros Occidental.

“These farm machineries will service more than 3,000 farmer beneficiaries here. And because the machines are mechanized, it will make farming easier and faster for them. It will also greatly improve their yield and increase their income,” Leonidas said.

According to Leonidas, the tractors would be managed by the cooperatives as an enterprise where the farmer-members and other farmers in the community could rent the tractors. The earnings would be used as business assets of the cooperatives and for the maintenance of the tractors.

When asked if this scheme works, Leonidas said, “Yes it does! I am proud to say that our farmers have bought farm implements and accessories out of the profit they earned from the farm machines that we gave to them last year.”

Prior to the turn over, the DAR conducted an orientation for farmer-members of the 27 cooperatives for the proper use of the tractors. Tractor experts oriented the farmers on proper operation, mounting of accessories, safety, care and maintenance of the tractors.
