Php 1.2-B earmarked for infrastructure projects in Negros Occidental’s agrarian reform covered areas

balita.phBACOLOD CITY — The Department of Budget has earmarked Php 1.2-billion budget for the construction of infrastructure projects in agrarian reform covered areas in Negros Occidental, an official of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) said.

DAR Region 6 Director Stephen Leonidas said the DBM allocated the amount since Negros Occidental was identified as one of the recipient provinces of the government’s poverty alleviation program.

Under the anti-poverty program, different national agencies are tasked to handle specific regions and provinces.

Agrarian Reform Secretary Virgilio de los Reyes requested to handle the project for Negros Occidental, said Leonidas, who was in Bacolod Wednesday for the turnover of Php 67 million worth of farm facilities and equipment to 26 agrarian reform beneficiary organizations in the province.

He said that through the plans prepared by different line agencies, the DAR and the provincial government have identified various infrastructure projects like farm-to-market roads and bridges.

He said their agency also identified different key areas where the poverty alleviation program would be best needed, including the cities of San Carlos and Cadiz in the north, and La Carlota, Himamaylan, and Binalbagan and Hinoba-an towns in the south.

“These infrastructure projects are aimed at helping farmer-beneficiaries focus on agrarian reform covered areas in the province,” Leonidas said, adding that these would particularly help them deliver their products effectively and efficiently from their respective farms to different markets.

The DAR official said the budget would come from the Department of Agriculture through its savings fund.

“The proposal was already granted by the DBM which allocated the fund, after we have completed the validation and documentation of the plans submitted by different line agencies,” Leonidas said.

He added that the DAR and the provincial government are waiting for the go-signal to start the project through the Department of Public Works and Highways as the implementing agency.(PNA) RMA/NLG/EPN
