Organic farming gets boost with new equipment

piaNEGROS OCCIDENTAL, October 22, (PIA6) – The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) recently turned over a total of 18 shredders to thirteen Agrarian Reform Beneficiary Organizations (ARBOs) here in order to boost organic farming in the province.

Ronald Gareza, Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer of DAR – Negros Occidental South, said that the province needs to develop farms and sugarcane farms because of the promotion of climate change proofing, hence, the need to improve organic farming.

Gareza said that they find organic farming a successful farming system, adding that there is organic farming in the province primarily because of health benefits, as well as increased production and income.

The thirteen recipients of Kubota water cooled diesel engine model PK-T-7HP shredders are: Hda. Carmenchica ARB Farm Workers Assoc; Crossing Ibus Farmers Credit Cooperative; Friends of the Highlands Planters Cooperative; Hacienda Manzanero Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Association; Hacienda Velez Malaga Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Organization.

Also part of the list of recipients are NAGASI ARB MPC; Hacienda Viscaya Agrarian Reform Cooperative; Casal-agan Workers Multi-Purpose Cooperative; Gen Malvar ARBs MPC; Occidental Negros ARBs Planters Association, Inc; Malaga – Cuenca Agrarian Reform Cooperative; Minoro-Isabel ARB Assn Inc; and Camandag Rice & Sugar Farmer Assn.

Because of DAR’s partnership with Eco-Agri Foundation, there is a technology in organic farming wherein they require vermi-composting in their production.

This was the reason why DAR – Negros Occidental South requested for shredder machines through the Agrarian Reform Community Connectivity and Economic Support Services (ARCESS), to be distributed to ARBOs, according to Gareza.

The vermi-composting was started by the Friends of the Highlands Cooperative at Barangay Mailum, Bago City.

In addition to the shredders, 15 kilos of worms will also be distributed to assure better productivity of the shredders.

The shredders will be used to strip sugarcanes into pieces and will serve as food for the worms. (JCM/CBA/PIA6 Negros Occidental)
