DAR NegOcc-South launches water project in Pontevedra

sunstarTHE Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Negros Occidental-South has launched the Community Managed Potable Water Supply and Hygiene (CPWASH) Project at Sitio Casal-agan, Barangay Antipolo in Pontevedra town last Monday.

The agency has collaborated with the local government units (LGU) of Pontevedra and the Casal-agan Agrarian Reform Cooperative as recipient agrarian reform beneficiaries organization (Arbo) for the implementation of the project, a press release from DAR said.

The project aims to enhance recipient-households’ access to water and sanitation services, it said, adding that it will also improve the water supply and sanitation situation among agrarian reform communities (ARCs) through low-cost, culturally acceptable, and appropriate technologies that can be managed and sustained by community members.

Moreover, DAR said the construction of the water and sanitation facilities, including Biosand Filter, Iron Removal Filter, Biogas Digester, and Rain Water Collector will benefit the community particularly the 86 members of the cooperative, 262 pupils of the Casal-agan Elementary School, and 45 pupils of Casal-agan Daycare Center.

The DAR is set to identify para-engineers from the recipient-community to undergo training on construction of the facilities to be conducted by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda), which will eventually provide the accreditation.

The facilities are not only beneficial to public health, but the expertise gained by community members is also an important skill for future income generating activities, the DAR added.
