DAR turns over P1.17 M flood control project

The Department of Agrarian Reform Negros Occidental 2 turned over a P1.17 million  Flood Control Project to two barangays in  San Enrique town yesterday.

The 245-meter project at Mambaho Creek located in Barangays Baliwagan and Sibucan, covering 359 hectares is under the DAR Bottom Up Budgeting/Grassroots Participatory Budgeting.
San Enrique, consisting of 10 barangays, is located in a low-lying area and is  a catch basin for water from nearby cities and municipalities during rainy season, causing floods in the town, City Agrarian Reform Program Officer Edna Villaruel, said.

Mambaho Creek overflows during rainy season flooding farmlands and residential areas. There are times when the rivers and creeks are silted causing damage to crops and livestock and even infrastructure leading to less income and failure of production, she said.

“All residents of San Enrique will benefit from this project that is a response to climate change,” Lucrecia Taberna, Provincial ARPO II, said.

San Enrique Mayor Mario Magno, through municipality accountant Celedonio Ofalia, thanked DAR for the flood control project. He also reminded the barangay officials to maintain cleanliness in the creek because of reports of trash thrown in the new facility.

In 2014, the projects proposed by the San Enrique LGU were approved by DAR for funding and implementation. On Sept. 9, 2014, the Department of Budget and Management issued a Sub-allotment release Order No. 6 to DAR for P1.17 million for the flood control project.
On March 24, 2015, the construction of the 245 lineal meters flood control project began and the project was completed on May 7, 2015, in accordance in the approved plans and specifications.

DAR distributed 259.4019 hectares of land to ARBs through the Operation Land Transfer and Voluntary Land Transfer in the municipality, Taberna said.*KBC
