DAR turns over P5M worth of support services

piaNEGROS OCCIDENTAL, June 16 (PIA6) - - The Department of Agrarian Reform through its Second Agrarian Reform Communities Project (ARCP II) turned over a total of P5,763,510.78 worth of support services  to four Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries’ Organizations (ARBOs) in Barangay Gen. Malvar in Pontevedra town here.

The ARCP II is a rural development project created by DAR as the executing agency under the Foreign Assisted Projects Office to alleviate poverty in the agrarian reform communities.

Barangay Gen. Malvar is an Agrarian Reform Community in Pontevedra town and is recipient of a total of five infrastructure projects which include the two-classroom school building with comfort rooms, multi-purpose pavement in Purok 1 and Purok 5 at 450 square meters each, 96-square meter agricultural warehouse and concreting of 345 meter road from Brgy. Gen. Malvar proper to Purok 1.

The multi-purpose pavements can accommodate 150 cavans of palays for drying aside from its use as a facility for other social events and gatherings in the barangay.

The warehouse can serve as storage facilities for the members for their agricultural crops.

Each classroom has an area of 112 square meters where school children will have access to quality education right in their barangay and not somewhere else.

Provincial Agrarian Reform Officer II for DAR South Lucrecia Taberna revealed that the ARBOs in Gen. Malvar are also set to receive soon two farm tractors from DAR as a grant after these have been thoroughly inspected by the DAR regional office.

The DAR-South is set to distribute a total of eight farm tractors each amounting to P3.1 million to ARBOs, as a form of the department’s support services in preparation to the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement for the readiness and competitiveness of the sugar industry come 2015.

“In every step there is a challenge but DAR maintains the positive outlook that these services will reach the intended ARBs,” Taberna said.

“Gen. Malvar is at the receiving end of the bundle of support services given by DAR.  This has been our pilot area in terms of support services and there are more success stories here than other areas through their ARBOs,” Taberna said.

The four ARBOs which received the support services were Gen. Malvar Irrigators Multi Purpose Cooperative, Gen. Malvar ARB MPC, Kauswagan MPC, and the Tarug Malvar Farmers Irrigators Association.

The challenge remains on how to development and use these support services for additional income to the organizations and the sustainability factor, Taberna added.*(JCM/EAD-PIA6 Negros Occidental)
