Vermicomposting tech introduced to farmers

visayan dailyThe Eco Agri-Foundation, a non-stock-non-profit organization in Bacolod City, in cooperation with the R. U Foundry and the Department of Agrarian Reform introduced this month the vermicomposting technology to a farmers’ cooperative Brgy. Mailum, Bago City, Negros Occidental to help them improve their production, Aladino Moraca, executive manager of EAF, said yesterday.

Moraca said vermicomposting is a process using various worms, usually red wigglers, white worms, and other earthworms to create a heterogeneous mixture of decomposing vegetable or food waste, bedding materials, and vermicast.

He said the manure of the worms mixed with the soil is gathered after several days and used as fertilizer.

Moraca added that aside from improving the production of the farmers, fertilizer produced through vermicomposting can also be sold to boost their livelihood.

The R.U. foundry also lent a machine to shred garbage and other biodegradable materials that will be utilized as feed for the worms.

Rodel Cadigal, chairman of Friends of Highlands producers’ cooperative, said their 40 members are elated that EAF, and R.U. Foundry introduced the vermicomposting technology to them.

Cadigal said they will no longer need to buy fertilizers and the excess will be sold and the income from it will go to the funds of their cooperative.

RU Foundry owner Ramon Uy said this is part of their corporate social responsibility to share the technology they are using to help small farmers in Negros Occidental.*APN
