DAR provides clean water to farm community in Siquijor

web 2015r7 001Farmers and residents of Enrique Villanueva town in Suiquijor will now be safe from water-borne diseases as the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) recently turned over a potable water supply system in the rural community.

The project, implemented under the DAR’s Community-Managed Potable Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (CPWASH), was given to the Kapunungan sa mga Anak sa Yuta ug Dagat (KAYUD), a farmers’ cooperative, and to Enrique Villanueva Central School, both in Enrique Villanueva town.

web 2015r7 002Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer Louie Naranjo said the CPWASH consists of a rain-water collector, bio-sand filters, iron-removal filters and a bio-gas digester.

“These materials that make-up the CPWASH is low-cost and indigenous based. It’s a pro-poor technology aimed to improve access to potable water especially in areas with high incidence of water-borne diseases,” said Naranjo.

web 2015r7 003In his message, Naranjo said that the project will be replicated in other barangays . Enrique Villanueva Mayor Gerald V. Pal-ing expressed his gratitude that his municipality became a recipient of the project. He encouraged the beneficiaries to take care of the water supply system and to use it properly.
