DAR launches farm business school in Southern Leyte

philstar new logoMANILA, Philippines - The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) has recently launched a farm business school in Southern Leyte to impart to farmer-beneficiaries the skills to make their farm lots more profitable.

Regional Director Sheila Enciso said 31 farmers, all agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) and members of the Hantag Farmers Multi-Purpose Cooperative, Inc. in Barangay Hantag, Maasin City, attended the first session.

She said that Barangay Hantag is part of the Maasin agrarian reform community. It  will be included among the 15 sites nationwide selected for the project, she added.

Enciso said that P128,000 is allocated for the training, which will take up to 25 sessions in partnership with the DAR through the Agricultural Training Institute.

Melecia Ong, Program Beneficiaries Development Division chief, said that the "school" is an on-site training where farmers learn about high value crops production and marketing of their produce.

She said that the participants are expected to become agricultural entrepreneurs and will be developing their own 500-square meter lot under the project.

She said that the project is among the various support services extended to ARBs under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program to increase farmer’s income and contribute to food security.
