DAR Regional Director Sheila Enciso said that the FBS, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (DA) thru the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) and the LGU, is among the various support services extended to ARBs under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) aimed to increase farmer’s income and contribute to national food security.

She said that Barangay Hantag was fortunate to be included to the 15 sites nationwide selected for the project.

Enciso said that the 29 graduates had undergone a three-month training on agricultural entrepreneurship.

Proud that they learned a lot in the FBS, Cristituto Sumilhig said that it is not enough for a farmer to produce more but to learn the demands in the market.

Based on the result of their survey, Pedro Ponce, chairman of the HFMPC said that camote and peanut have high demands.

The farmers utilized the 1.5 hectares land mortgaged to the cooperative as the demo farm for sweet corn which was intercropped with camote. Sweet corn and camote were among the crops planted in the demo farm for the FBS.

The farmers were inspired when FBS facilitators Lucita Galleto of DAR and Virgilia Barrientos of the City Agricultural Services brought them to farms owned by successful farmer-entrepreneurs in the cities of Baybay and Ormoc, Leyte for additional learning insights.

One of the farmer-entrepreneurs they visited was Amerito Aragon, an agrarian reform beneficiary (ARB) whose family is into high-value vegetables production; swine, goat and carabao raising; fishpond and vermi composting.

City Councilor Nestor Sy, chairperson for the committee on agriculture encouraged the farmers to produce quality farm products and aspire to become exporters of agricultural products. (JOSE ALSMITH L. SORIA)
