DAR-Samar awards outstanding farmers

piaCATBALOGAN CITY, Samar, June 25 (PIA)—The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR)-Samar cited four outstanding farmers in their Agrarian Reform Communities (ARCs) as the department marked its 26th Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP).

Pedro Abajo of Brgy Panoypoy, Calbayog City; Leo Piczon of Bogy Nacuve, Gandara, Samar; Renato Tiara of Bogy Camurubuan, Jiabong and Luisa Bardaje of Daram Samar got their plaques of recognition from the DAR Secretary himself, Sec. Virgilio de los Reyes yesterday.

Abajo cultivates 2.2 hectares of land awarded by DAR in 2001, from then on, the fruits of the land have given his family of six  sustenance.

The 50 something farmer said that he divided his lot into plantations of coconuts and banana, a portion of which with jackfruits and cacao and a portion of which palay.

“The lot given me is a great help, so in return, I work very hard  to get the maximum benefits from the land I till,” Abajo said.

He takes pride that he has sent one son to school who now teaches in their barangay. He has also acquired a motorcycle that he uses to vend his products to other barangays.

Renato Tiara, 46 from Barangay Camurubuan, Jiabong also cultivates 2.8 hectares of land where he grows mangoes, rice and banana. He also takes care of farm animals for additional income.

Tiara owns now a concrete two-storey house, a motorcycle and some appliances.

His being an outstanding farmer has also given him popularity that he won a seat in the barangay council.

The awarding ceremony took place as DAR marked its 26th CARP anniversary, De los Reyes also awarded Certificates of Land titles to some 470 agrarian reform beneficiaries. (PIA 8-Samar)
