DAR Launches Project ConVERGE

news reg 1 pix 1 feb. 1 2016The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) recently launched a rural development project that seeks to increase the income and productivity of farmers in Western and Northern Mindanao and Caraga.

DAR Undersecretary for Foreign Assisted projects Herman Ongkiko said the project called Convergence on Value Chain Enhancement for Rural Growth and Development (ConVerge) aims “to reduce poverty incidence and the vulnerability of farmers through crop diversification and processing of raw materials, either as semi-finished or finished products to increase farm income, productivity and competitiveness of farmers.”

The P2.3-billion project ConVERGE is a flagship project of International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a specialized agency of the United Nations dedicated to eradicating rural poverty in developing countries.

“Specifically, ConVERGE project aims to promote sustainable livelihood activities based on key commodities of Mindanao regions, such as rice, rubber, coffee and cassava among others,” Ongkiko said.

Ongkiko added that more than 300,000 small-holder farmers would be elevated to a higher level of development by assisting and guiding them in terms of product development and market linkage.news reg 1 pix 2 feb. 1 2016

Projects under ConVERGE will be implemented in 11 agrarian reform community clusters in the provinces of Regions 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula), 10 (Northern Mindanao) and 13 (Caraga).

For the success of the 6-year implementation of the project, IFAD South-East Asia Manager Mr. Benoit Thierry urged the implementers to have the commitment for the program and to learn and improve from every experience they would gain.
