Emerging biz enterprise seen for farmers, ARB communities

visayan dailyRU Foundry is replicating the initiatives in Alangalang, Leyte in partnership with St. Benedict Farmers Institute for Sustainable Agriculture, its press release said.

The initiative on vermicomposting is turning into a promising enterprise for the Small Farmers and Agrarian Reform Communities who were survivors of recent typhoons based on the firm’s experience in implementing the project in the provinces of Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley, the press release said.

The company said it is hoping that efforts will spark and encourage support from other stakeholders to expedite the process of spreading the technology in areas or communities devastated by the recent storms.

Efforts to help the survivors were made by the foundry in collaboration with the Department of Agrarian Reform, World Food Program, United Nations Industrial Development Organization and Food and Agriculture Organization, the press release also said.

The firm’s community-based organic fertilizer production through vermicomposting was adopted with pilot sites in Brgy. Rizal, Moncayo, Compostela Valley and Brgy.  Kinablangan, Baganga, Davao Oriental, it said.

Two shredder machines with a capacity of two tons per hour each, 70 kilos of  African Night Crawler,  four units of Vermitea Brewer and 12 units of vermi beds were part of the support provided by the foundry.

Technical teams to facilitate the technology transfer were also deployed for three months by the firm EcoAgri to do the initiative at the community level, the press release said.

The communities have produced four tons of vermicompost and production capacity is seen to increase to one ton per day on the second quarter of  2014, the press release added.*
