North Cotabato Farm Communities Now Drinks Potable Water

news 2 reg pix 1 feb. 22 2016Agrarian reform communities (ARCs) in North Cotabato are now drinking clean potable water after the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) recently turned-over the Community-managed Potable Water Supply Sanitation and Hygiene (CPWASH) project.

The CPWASH project was implemented in the villages of Allab, Balogo, and Tumbras under the Arakan Valley Special Agrarian Reform Community, Capayuran, Upper Baguer and Balogo ARC, and Tumbras ARC, respectively.

“These potable water facilities were provided to supply potable water and improve the sanitation situation in ARCs,” said Marion Abella, Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer.news 2 reg pix 2 feb. 22 2016

Each CPWASH water facility consists of a biogas digester, iron removal filter, bio-sand filter and rain water collector, Abella said.

Abella explained that the iron removal filters and bio-sand filters are low-cost and indigenous-based potable water supply technologies designed for areas with murky water and areas with high incidence of water-borne diseases. The bio-gas digester, on the other hand, is a sanitation facility that produces methane gas from livestock manure and human wastes and converts it to liquefied petroleum gas for cooking.

Farmer Fe Jacinto of Balogo, Pigcawayan said the CPWASH project is a big blessing to her family because it saves them P1,100 for buying gallons of drinking water and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) monthly.

news 2 reg pix 3 feb. 22 2016Jacinto said the people in their community usually buy purified drinking water from the water refilling stations at P25 per gallon because they were not sure if their water supply was safe to drink.

“Every family who has an access to this facility in our community will save more or less P350 pesos per month. At present, there are 10 families benefiting from the project,” Jacinto added.

“With the CPWASH facilities in our community, it feels like we won the lottery. The biogas digester provides us gas for cooking and reduces our dependence on LPG while the iron removal filters and bio-sand filters are two useful facilities that turn rain water and water from artesian well safe to drink,” Jacinto explained.news 2 reg pix 4 feb. 22 2016

Jacinto also said the project, helps preserve the environment as piggery waste that we used to throw away is used as raw material for biogas digesters.

While the DAR provided the CPWASH technology and technical assistance, the LGUs of Arakan, Pigcawayan, and Midsayap offered the labor and construction materials.

During the turn-over, certificates of training were awarded to 30 Para-engineers trained in the installation and construction of the water facilities. (Rodel Orejudos)
