Mindanao ARCs receive P2.5B from Italian gov’t

PIAnewlogo2017GENERAL SANTOS CITY, May 31 (PIA)---Fifty-three thousand households in 35 agrarian reform communities (ARCs) in Mindanao were recipients of P2.5 billion worth of projects from Italian government, according to the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR)-Sarangani. The Italian Assistance to the Agrarian Reform Community Development Support Program (IARCDSP) in partnership with DAR has chosen the ARCs based in Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani for the implementation of various projects to help uplift their lives.

DAR Secretary Rafael Mariano and Italian Ambassador Massimo Roscigno recently visited the project sites in three ARCs in Sarangani-- two in Alabel and one in Glan.

Projects visited in Alabel included solar dryers, farm to market road, and potable water systems. They also turned over two solar dryers to Brgy. Baluntay in Alabel town here.

With the new dryers, Mariano said the farmers will no longer dry their palay or rice along the road and they will now produce a good quality of rice.

“The solar dryers will greatly eliminate post-harvest losses which will make the farmers’ harvest competitive. If our rice is comparable with imported rice, it will contribute to the country’s goal to achieve rice sufficiency,” Mariano pointed out.

In Glan, the team visited the subprojects for construction/opening of 1.5 km road, and fish processing livelihood assistance while turning over also potable water system level II.

Ambassador Roscigno related that the land distribution and support services system that were provided to the farmers in Italy had prepared them toward a larger economic goal, expressing then the hope that same will happen to the farmers in the Philippines.

Mariano said the development projects in the four provinces will provide the farmers with means to curtail poverty and increase productivity helping them improve their plight.

According to DAR Sarangani Provincial Agrarian Reform Officer II Felix C. Frias, the project which is expected to be completed in 2019 is in support of the peace and development initiatives in Mindanao.

Being the lead agency, DAR implements various projects in Mindanao including construction of farm to market road, rehabilitation and construction of irrigation system, post-harvest facilities, training of farmer organizations and new farm technologies.

Meanwhile, Sarangani Governor Steve Chiongbian Solon hailed the importance of IARCDSP in helping materialize most of the infrastructure projects in the municipalities saying the Italian fund did a great job in augmenting the province’s limited budget.

Speaking on behalf of Sarangani lone district Rep. Rogelio Pacquiao, chief of Staff Atty. Ryan Ramos also expressed gratitude to the Italian government, describing its initiative through IARCDSP as “testament of cooperation and political will.” (ARTorino, DAR Sarangani/CTApelacio-PIA 12 Sarangani-General Santos City)
