Six Sigma: a Breakthrough Improvement Strategy
Sigma is a letter in the Greek alphabet that has become the statistical symbol and metric for process variation. Organizations (of any type - private, government, not-for-profit, non-government) are built around processes. Processes produce deliverables (goods or services). But since processes are not perfect, deliverables are not consistent in their characteristics. These inconsistencies are the result of process variation. Thus came into the realm of management science the philosophy of management of variation. And for this process variation to be managed and controlled, world-class organizations today use Six Sigma Improvement Strategy.
If processes are within the Six Sigma Level, it means that if there are 1 million opportunities to provide a service, only 3.4 are not acceptable to the customer. The customers are those who are receiving the process deliverables. As customers today place high value on consistent business processes, driving out defects and reduction of variation has been on priority list of excellent companies and institutions. This is the main essence of Six Sigma. Excellent organizations manage processes, drive out defects and optimize methods to reduce variation by using Six Sigma Breakthrough Improvement Strategy.
Six Sigma Black Belt Program
In the core of Six Sigma is the program called Six Sigma Black Belt Training (SSBB). The SSBB Program is a unique training system based on the learning principle called Problem-Based Learning. Participants or the Black Belt Candidates will be required to identify and be involved in actual process improvement projects while they are undergoing the training process. The training is spread out in a 4-month span:- one week training and 3 weeks project implementation. After completion of the training, the Black Belt will work on the 2nd project. The completion of the 2 projects will be the basis for certification.
The Six Sigma Projects, as well as the Six Sigma Black Belt Training follows the sequential approach of Six Sigma Methodology called DMAIC Process :
- Define - Describe the process, problem, oppurtunity
- Measure - Gather data
- Analyze - Listen to the data
- Improve - Develop solutions, design processes
- Control - Plan for stability
