DAR builds processing facility for women farmers of Lake Sebu
LAKE SEBU, South Cotabato – The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) has opened a new door of opportunities to the farmer-members of Kestubong Women's Association Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (KeWARB), when it spearheaded the construction of a processing center here.
“We want to raise the level of competency of the 35 women-farmers of KeWARB from being mere raw farm products producers into processors themselves,” said DAR Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer Evangeline Bueno.
Bueno said farmers living in this area of Lake Sebu plants “nito”, a grass that they process and manufacture into handicrafts products.
“This project is a big help to the farmers and to nearby farm communities who depend on planting nito grass and manufacturing products from this plant as a source of income and livelihood,” Bueno said.
DAR Municipal Agrarian Reform Program Officer Frederick Pereyra and Municipal Agriculturist Zaldy A. Artacho, led the groundbreaking rites of the P300,000.00 worth processing center in Barangay Tasiman, Lake Sebu.
Pereyra said the project’s aim is to increase the income of farmers by providing them with a facility to process and add value to their farm products.
Aside from rice and corn, handicrafts from nito grass are the main agri-products of farmers in Lake Sebu. Pereyra said the women farmers, with the help of their children and people in the community, manufacture bags, wallets, hats made from dried nito and sell it to the markets.
A check amounting to P300,000.00 was given to the association for the procurement of construction materials. The said building is expected to be completed after 120 calendar days or before the end of 2021.
The KeWARB is a recipient of the Village Level Farm-focused Enterprise Development (VLFED) project that aims to enhance the products of the agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) using appropriate facilities and equipment applicable to the agri-business enterprise of the ARBs.
Under the project, the farmers will undergo seminars and training on nito cultivation, product development, and business marketing to develop their farm enterprise and make their business operations profitable.
