The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) recently turned over a solar-powered irrigation system (SPIS) to increase the farm productivity of farmers in Barangay Mangaan, Santol in La Union.

“Based on our research, we have identified Barangay Mangaan as one of the most arid places in La Union. This area gets too dry in the summer, especially when there is El Nino where it becomes too dry to support vegetation. We are providing our farmers with this solar-powered irrigation because we know that this will greatly increase their production,” Secretary Brother John Castriciones said.

The irrigation system was built under the DAR’s Climate Resilient Farm Productivity Support Project (CRFPSP).

According to DAR-Ilocos Regional Director Primo Lara, the P1 million-worth SPIS can irrigate three to five hectares and will run on solar energy.

“This type of irrigation system is diesel-free and can irrigate rice and other high-value crops all year round,” Lara said.

The project includes community orientation, planning, and training on the operation of project facility and installation of solar pump equipment.

Lara said the solar-powered irrigation is a complete system which provides fresh water from a well and reservoir for use in livestock, domestic use, and industrial agriculture.

Around seventy-five (75) farmer-members of the Mangaan Agrarian Reform Cooperative, DAR-assisted agrarian reform beneficiary organization (ARBO) and their families will benefit from the project.

"Batay sa aming pagsasaliksik, napag-alaman namin na ang Barangay Mangaan ang isa sa pinaka-tigang na lugar sa La Union. Ang lugar na ito ay masyadong tuyo sa tag-araw, lalo na kapag mayroong El Nino kung saan masyadong natitigang ang lupa at di kayang mabuhay ng mga pananim. Kami ay nagbibigay sa mga magsasaka ng solar-powered na patubig na ito sapagkat alam namin malaking tulong ito sa kanilang produksyon," ani Secretary Brother John Castriciones.

Ang irigasyon ay itinayo sa ilalim ng Climate Resilient Farm Productivity Support Project (CRFPSP) ng DAR.

Ayon kay DAR-Ilocos Regional Director Primo Lara, ang P1 milyong halaga ng SPIS ay maaaring magpatubig ng tatlo (3) hanggang limang (5) ektarya at patatakbuhin sa pamamagitan ng solar energy.

"Ang ganitong uri ng irigasyon ay di gumagamit ng diesel at maaaring magpatubig ng palay at iba pang mga pananim sa buong taon," sabi ni Lara.

Kasama sa proyekto ang oryentasyon para sa mga miyembro ng komunidad, pagpaplano, at pagsasanay sa pagpapatakbo ng pasilidad ng proyekto at pag-install ng kagamitan ng solar pump.

Sinabi ni Lara na ang patubig na pinapagana ng solar ay isang kumpletong sistema na nagbibigay ng sariwang tubig mula sa isang balon at imbakan para magamit sa pag-aalaga ng hayop, gamit sa bahay at pang-industriyang agrikultura.

May pitumpu’t limang (75) magsasakang-miyembro ng Mangaan Agrarian Reform Cooperative na isang agrarian reform beneficiary cooperative na tinutulungan ng DAR at ang kanilang mga pamilya ang makikinabang sa patubig.
