As temperatures rise across the country, the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) is taking early measures to ensure that Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARBs) have access to adequate water for farming.

DAR Secretary Conrado Estrella III has directed field officials to facilitate the inspection and repair of irrigation facilities in Agrarian Reform Communities (ARCs) to keep them fully operational before the dry season intensifies. He emphasized the need for proactive measures, including the rehabilitation of non-functional irrigation systems, to help farmers sustain their agricultural activities.

The DAR chief highlights the urgency of these preparations even as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has yet to officially declare the start of the summer season despite warmer temperatures already being felt across the country.

Last year, at least 130 local government units in the provinces of Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, Romblon, Ifugao, Antique, Sultan Kudarat, Basilan, Maguindanao del Sur, Maguindanao Del Norte and South Cotabato were placed under a state of calamity due to El Niño-induced droughts and extreme heat.

Severe droughts caused by El Niño last year affected over 333,000 farmers and fishers across 15 regions, resulting in PHP15.3 billion in agricultural losses. The government responded with PHP14.54 billion in aid, but Secretary Estrella stressed that prevention is key to avoiding similar hardships.

“While we will be spared from the El Niño phenomenon this year, it should not be a reason for us to be complacent. The more that we should stay focused on our job of maintaining a better working condition for our ARBs,” Secretary Estrella said. (By: Richard B. Gallardo)

DAR Inihahanda ang mga Patubig Para Suportahan ang mga Magsasaka sa Tagtuyot

Habang tumataas ang temperatura sa buong bansa, maagang naghahanda ang Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) upang matiyak na may sapat na tubig ang Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARBs) para sa kanilang sakahan.

Inatasan ni DAR Secretary Conrado Estrella III ang kanyang field officials na pangunahan ang pagsusuri at pagsasaayos ng mga pasilidad ng irigasyon sa Agrarian Reform Communities (ARCs) upang masiguro na gumagana ang mga ito bago pa lumala ang tagtuyot. Binigyang-diin niya ang kahalagahan ng maagang paghahanda, kabilang ang pagsasaayos ng mga sirang patubig, upang matulungan ang mga magsasaka na ipagpatuloy ang kanilang pagsasaka.

Ayon kay Estrella, mahalaga ang agarang pagkilos kahit hindi pa opisyal na idinedeklara ng Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) ang pagsisimula ng tag-init, lalo na’t ramdam na ang init sa maraming lugar sa bansa.

Noong nakaraang taon, hindi bababa sa 130 lokal na pamahalaan sa mga lalawigan ng Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, Romblon, Ifugao, Antique, Sultan Kudarat, Basilan, Maguindanao del Sur, Maguindanao Del Norte at South Cotabato ang isinailalim sa state of calamity dahil sa matinding tagtuyot at matataas na temperatura dulot ng El Niño.

Dahil sa El Niño noong nakaraang taon, mahigit 333,000 magsasaka at mangingisda sa 15 rehiyon ang naapektuhan, na nagresulta sa PHP 15.3 bilyong pinsala sa agrikultura. Nagbigay ang gobyerno ng PHP 14.54 bilyong tulong, ngunit binigyang-diin ni Secretary Estrella na mas mahalaga ang maagap na pag-iwas kaysa sa pagresponde sa krisis.

“Kahit hindi tayo maaapektuhan ng El Niño ngayong taon, hindi ito dahilan para maging kampante. Mas lalo nating dapat pagtuunan ng pansin ang pagpapanatili ng maayos na kundisyon para sa ating mga ARBs,” ani Secretary Estrella.
