Renewed Partnership: DAR Assisted Cooperatives and Bucay District Jail Continue Successful Collaboration for Sustainable Agriculture

Two cooperatives assisted by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) renewed their marketing agreement with Bucay District Jail in Abra. This partnership, is part of the Partnership Against Hunger and Poverty (PAHP) Program, was officially renewed on January 12, 2024 at Bucay, Abra.

For the past three years, the Baug Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative and Gayaman Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative have been supplying Bucay District Jail with various products, including eggs, poultry, livestock, vegetables, and groceries. The agreement was renewed through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement.

Irene Nieves, Chairperson of Baug Farmers MPC, expressed excitement about the agreement, saying, "This Memorandum of Agreement is a great start for 2024. It will help us sell our products and support our farmers."

Jovito Rosendo, Manager of Gayaman Farmers MPC, thanked DAR for connecting them to the Bucay District Jail. "Thanks to DAR, we have a chance to sell the vegetables we grow," Rosendo said.

Jail Warden Franz Marc F. Ganitano expressed appreciation for the cooperatives' commitment. "We thank Baug Farmers MPC and Gayaman Farmers MPC for this partnership. We look forward to helping our farmers in small ways at Bucay District Jail. Thanks to DAR for linking us to these cooperatives."

This collaboration follows the model of linking Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Organizations (ARBOs) with private and government entities, such as the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). The initiative ensures a steady supply of food items to these institutions while providing farmers with a consistent market for their agricultural yields.

Present during the Memorandum of Agreement signing were representatives from DAR-Abra, including Edelsa Formoso (PAHP focal person), Trinidad Bunag (ARPO II), Rita Arlen Dela Vega (ARPO II), Janeth Tagudar (ARPO I), and Esmely Guzman III (ARPO I).

This renewed partnership not only showcases the success of the PAHP Program but also underscores the positive impact of such collaborations in empowering farmers and fostering sustainable agricultural practices.
